When the problem looks behavioral, but starts at night.

Disrupted sleep and airway obstruction can surface in a child as inattention, impulsivity, and irritability — patterns easily mistaken for behavior alone. At NRH Orthodontics in North Richland Hills, TX, an airway screening asks a different question first.

The connection

Poor sleep changes how a child functions.

Disordered sleep and the airway obstructions behind it can undercut a child's learning and emotional regulation — the same faculties school depends on.

When rest is fragmented night after night, the effects show up in daylight: reduced focus, weaker cognitive and behavioral performance, and more anxiety, impulsivity, hyperactivity, or aggression. For a child who already has ADHD, poor sleep can make symptoms harder to manage; for others, it can produce or worsen patterns that look like a behavioral disorder on their own.

The overlap matters because the daytime signs of a night-time airway problem are the same signs commonly attributed to attention and mood. When the airway is never examined, the underlying driver stays invisible.

What we do — and don't

This is a screening, not a diagnosis.

NRH Orthodontics does not diagnose ADHD or any behavioral disorder. What it does is look at the structural side — breathing, bite, and rest — that a behavioral evaluation often leaves out.

Since 2020, every patient here receives a low-radiation CBCT scan and an AAO airway-screening questionnaire as part of a standard intake. For a child, that means their breathing, any malocclusion, and their sleep patterns are examined together — a picture most orthodontic and behavioral workups never assemble.

When imaging points to something beyond the orthodontic scope, Dr. Fallah refers to a pediatric ENT. That referral is not a hand-off of a failed case; it is the correct clinical pathway when the finding belongs to another specialty.

Where to start

A few minutes of screening before any conclusion.

If your child's attention or mood concerns coincide with restless nights, snoring, or mouth-breathing, an airway screening is a low-cost way to rule a structural cause in or out.

The Childhood Disrupted Sleep Quiz is a short set of questions to see whether your child's sleep patterns warrant an airway-focused evaluation. It is a starting point, not a result — the evaluation, and any referral it prompts, is where the clinical work happens.
